M1917 training helmet with OD textured paint, a red band painted across the top and a punched hole on the rear brim. There is only slight surface rust; the liner is in fair shape, but missing the chin strap and is therefore loose inside the crown (can be removed).
 
M1917 helmets that were rejected by the US Army for use in combat, were punched with a hole, painted with a red stripe, and then sent to US Army bases for use in training.
